Big Books: Mrs. Dalloway

Big Books: Mrs. Dalloway In-Person

Our three-week summer course will return to the literature of Virginia Woolf; this time we will focus on the early modernist novel Mrs. Dalloway. Written in the aftermath of the Great War and the 1918 flu pandemic, Woolf’s treatment of consciousness and creation of multiple perspectives raise questions of sanity versus insanity, death and grief, and the meaning of life.

Barbara Joyce will lead our book discussion. She taught English for 20 years at New Trier High School and has led several past summer sessions, including those on Emily Dickinson, William Faulkner, and Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. The Big Books series is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Registration is required and Glencoe residents will take priority if the class fills up. Participants will receive a free copy of the book (one book per household). You may pick up your book, along with a bookmark listing the reading assignments for each class, starting June 1.
