Holiday Imagery Series: Hanukkah

Holiday Imagery Series: Hanukkah In-Person

For those who participate in its rituals--the lighting of candles, the exchange of gifts, and the consumption of treats both sweet (jelly donuts) and savory (potato latkes)--Hanukkah is likely the most beloved of Jewish holidays. But what do we really know about its traditions in bygone days? Glencoe art historian Julie Harris returns to discuss the evidence for Hanukkah rituals in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, what surviving menorahs, manuscript illuminations, prints and paintings reveal about the holiday's traditions over time, and how Hanukkah observance has been transformed in the United States.
