Big Books: Père Goriot

Big Books: Père Goriot In-Person

In this four-week session, Big Books participants will study Honoré de Balzac’s most enduringly popular work. Set in 1820s Paris with richly detailed characters and settings, Père Goriot realistically conveys the city and the era. Balzac “is one of the first novelists to understand the dominating importance of money in the dawning world of capitalism” (per the introduction to the Norton Critical Edition) and stands as an inventor of the modern novel.

Please note that the series has been shortened to four sessions, and the May 20th discussion has been cancelled.

The discussion will be led by Barbara Joyce, who taught English for 20 years at New Trier High School and has led many past summer sessions, including those on Gustav Flaubert, William Faulkner, and Virginia Woolf.
