Rise of the Smart Machines: Understanding AI In-Person
Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic fantasy—it's already shaping how we live, work and interact. From everyday tools like voice assistants and recommendation systems to complex technologies like predictive algorithms and autonomous systems, AI is evolving at breakneck speed. This talk will explore where AI stands today and how it's influencing our society in visible and invisible ways. We'll also peer into the future: Could intelligent machines surpass human capability? How might they redefine what it means to be conscious or alive? Exploring themes like transhumanism, bioengineering and machine ethics, our presenter, Dr. Davis Schneiderman, will consider both the exciting possibilities and the serious challenges of a world increasingly shaped by artificial minds. How can humanity adapt—and stay human—in the age of intelligent machines?
Dr. Schneiderman is the executive director of the Krebs Center for the Humanities and Professor of English at Lake Forest College. He is the principal investigator for a $1.2 million grant from the Mellon Foundation for a project called HUMAN: Humanities Understanding of the Machine-Assisted Nexus. This multi-year initiative explores artificial intelligence from a humanities perspective. As part of this work, Dr. Schneiderman speaks to audiences about AI in education, the workforce and beyond. He has studied AI ethics through the London School of Economics and recently facilitated a section of the Center for AI Safety’s “AI Safety, Ethics and Society” course. He previously served as Lake Forest College’s Krebs Provost and Dean of the Faculty.
