Big Books: Midnight's Children

Big Books: Midnight's Children In-Person

Saleem Sinai, a boy born at the exact moment of India’s independence on August 15, 1947, is the narrator of this classic 1981 novel. Gifted with telepathic powers, Saleem discovers that he is one of hundreds of children born at that same midnight hour, each of whom is also empowered with an extraordinary ability. From Bombay to Karachi to the jungles of Bangladesh, Saleem’s journey unfolds against a backdrop of decades of war, migration, and national turmoil. His life becomes inextricably linked to the fate of his country, and his story serves as a meditation on identity, colonial legacy, and the fragility of personal and national memory.

Holly Marihugh returns to lead this six-week session of Big Books, a guided discussion series of major works of literature. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Registration is required.
