Big Books: Gilgamesh

Big Books: Gilgamesh Online

The Epic of Gilgamesh, sometimes called the Assyrian Odyssey, is a too-much-neglected masterpiece of world literature and the prototype for superhero sagas. Written about a thousand years before the oldest parts of the Bible, it has all that we expect from an epic: divinity’s action in our lives, a hero’s travails and accomplishments, dramatic depth, and poetic insight. We also will discuss how the translator’s art profoundly affects our experience of the text. Joseph Alulis returns to lead this three-week session of Big Books, a guided discussion series of major works of literature.
