Based on the acclaimed novel by Claire Keegan, Small Things Like These takes place in the Irish town of New Ross during the approach to Christmas 1985. Cillian Murphy plays coal merchant Bill Furlong, a hardworking and well-regarded father whose deliveries take him to a local convent, where he witnesses the possible mistreatment of a young women, one of many unwed mothers taken in by the powerful institution. Interspersed are flashbacks to Bill’s own painful childhood, when he was a child of an unwed mother himself.
