Big Books: Screening of "The Portrait of a Lady" In-Person
Big Book participants are invited to attend a screening of the 1996 film version of Henry James's novel. Directed by Jane Campion, the cast stars Nicole Kidman (as Isabel Archer), Barbara Hershey (as Madame Merle), and John Malkovich (as the devious Gilbert Osmond). The supporting cast includes Sir John Gielgud, Shelley Winters, Christian Bale, Viggo Mortensen and Mary-Louise Parker. The film runs 144 minutes; you may want to bring a seat cushion and a sweater!
