SUMMARY:Big Books: Gilgamesh
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes called the Assyrian Odyssey\, Gilgamesh is a
too-much-neglected masterpiece of world literature and the prototype for
superhero sagas. Written about a thousand years before the oldest parts of
the Bible\, it has all that we expect from an epic: divinity’s action in
 our lives\, a hero’s travails and accomplishments\, dramatic depth\, and
poetic insight. In addition to a close reading of the text\, we will
discuss how the translator’s art profoundly affects our experience.
Joseph Alulis returns to lead this three-week session of Big Books\, a
guided discussion series of major works of literature. Sponsored by the
Friends of the Glencoe Public Library.\n\nRegistrants may pick up their
copy of the book and a bookmark with the reading assignments at the
Reference Desk starting January 4. The book is yours to keep. One copy per
household. If your plans change and you will not be participating in the
series\, please let Grace Hayek know as soon as possible and promptly
return your copy of the book so someone else can use it.
