Nobody's Fool: Why We Get Taken In and What We Can Do About It

Nobody's Fool: Why We Get Taken In and What We Can Do About It   Online

We're all susceptible to misinformation, sometimes spreading it unknowingly. While stopping it entirely is impossible, we can learn how deception works, recognize the signs, and empower ourselves. Join us for a talk with psychology professor Dr. Daniel J. Simons, co-author of Nobody's Fool: Why We Get Taken In and What We Can Do About It, brought to you in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Illinois Mis/Disinformation Task Force and 77 area libraries.

About Dr. Daniel J. Simons:
Dr. Daniel J. Simons is a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois where he heads the Visual Cognition Laboratory. In addition to his position in the Department of Psychology, he has courtesy appointments in the Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising and the Gies College of Business. His research explores the limits of awareness and memory, the reasons why we often are unaware of those limits, and the implications of such limits for our personal and professional lives. He is the co-author, with Christopher Chabris, of the 2023 book Nobody's Fool: Why We Get Taken In and What We Can Do About It as well as the 2010 New York Times bestseller, The Invisible Gorilla: How Our Intuitions Deceive Us

This program is brought to you in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Illinois Mis/Disinformation Task Force. To address the troubling rise of misinformation and disinformation and its impact on our elections, the League of Women Voters of Illinois formed a Mis/Disinformation Task Force in January 2024 with the goal of educating the general public on mis/disinformation. For more information or to ask a question, visit www.lwvil.org/misdis-info. Founded 104 years ago, the 3,800-member League of Women Voters of Illinois encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase the understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
