Big Books: A Bend in the River

Big Books: A Bend in the River In-Person

A Bend in the River is the tranquil-sounding setting for V. S. Naipaul's controversial masterpiece told from the point of view of Salim, a shopkeeper of Indian origins who bears witness to upheaval as European colonizers exit an unnamed country in central Africa. He sees the emergence of "Big Man," a quintessential African dictator who further complicates the future of the newly independent nation. Born in Trinidad to Indian parents, V.S. Naipaul published A Bend in the River in 1979 and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001.
